How to Choose the Right Additive for Powder Coatings?
Choose a powder coating additive by identifying the defect or performance target, confirming the Resin and curing system, and testing the lowest effective dosage under the real extrusion and curing conditions. Begin With Evidence, Not Assumptions
“Poor surface” is not a technical diagnosis.
Record what the defect looks like, when it appears and whether it affects every coated part.
Useful evidence includes:
Clear photographs
Substrate type
Pretreatment process
Film thickness
Extrusion temperature
Particle-size distribution
Spray settings
Oven air temperature
Actual metal temperature
Cure time
Existing formula
Changing an additive before collecting this information may hide the original cause.
Orange Peel: Check Flow and Gel Timing Together
Orange peel can result from poor melt flow, fast gelation, unsuitable viscosity, coarse particles, excessive film thickness or application conditions.
A leveling agent may improve surface smoothness, but the formulator should also review:
Resin melt viscosity
Curing speed
Extrusion dispersion
Powder particle size
Film build
Oven profile

Pinholes: Find the Source of the Gas
Pinholes may come from:
Porous castings
Galvanized substrates
Moisture
Contaminated Fillers
Trapped air
Volatile components
Excess film thickness
Rapid gelation
A degassing agent such as benzoin may help, but it cannot correct oil contamination or severely under-dried raw materials.
Run the same formula on a controlled metal panel and the actual production substrate. If the defect appears only on the production part, the substrate or pretreatment deserves closer attention.
Uneven Gloss: Separate Formulation From Oven Variation
Matting performance depends on resin chemistry, additive distribution, extrusion history, film thickness and cure temperature.
When one section of a large part is glossier than another, measure the actual metal temperature across the workpiece. Uneven heating may be the main cause.
When every panel has the wrong gloss but remains uniform, the matting ratio or formula compatibility is a stronger suspect.
Our outdoor physical matting additive is developed for TGIC systems and specified outdoor matte ranges. That does not mean it should be transferred directly into every HAA or hybrid formulation.
Poor Scratch Resistance: Review the Whole Film
Wax additives can improve slip and reduce surface friction. However, weak scratch performance can also result from under-curing, low crosslink density or unsuitable resin hardness.
Check cure first. A wax should enhance a properly formed film rather than compensate for incomplete crosslinking.
Select the Trial Dosage
An OEM/ODM manufacturer of powder coating additives should provide a recommended starting range, but laboratory validation remains necessary.
A controlled trial can compare:
Formula without the additive
Low dosage
Middle dosage
Upper recommended dosage
Keep all other variables constant. Evaluate appearance, gloss, adhesion, impact, bending, hardness, recoating and the specific target property.
Scale Up Carefully
A laboratory mixer and production extruder do not provide identical shear, residence time or temperature history.
During scale-up, monitor:
Feed stability
Extrudate appearance
Extrusion temperature
Cooling behaviour
Grinding
Powder flow
Spray performance
