What Is Another Name for Polyester Resin?

Polyester Resin may be called polyester binder, saturated polyester resin, carboxyl-functional polyester resin, powder-coating polyester, unsaturated polyester resin, fiberglass resin, or laminating resin. These terms are not exact synonyms in every context, so the correct name depends on the resin chemistry and application.

For powder coatings, “saturated polyester resin” or “powder-coating polyester resin” is usually more accurate than “fiberglass resin.”

Why One Material Has Several Names

Industrial materials are often named by:

  • Polymer family

  • Reactive functional group

  • Curing method

  • Supplied form

  • Final application

  • Regional trade language

  • Customer industry

A chemist may describe the molecular functionality, while a purchasing team uses the application name.

For example, one factory may request “93/7 polyester,” another asks for “TGIC polyester resin,” and a third uses “outdoor powder-coating binder.”

These descriptions may point toward a similar resin direction, but they do not automatically define identical acid value, viscosity, cure response, or film performance.

A full technical specification is still necessary.

Saturated Polyester Resin

Saturated polyester contains no intentionally reactive carbon-carbon double bonds along the main chain for the type of curing used in unsaturated composite resins.

In powder coatings, saturated polyester is designed with reactive end groups such as:

  • Carboxyl groups

  • Hydroxyl groups

These groups later react with a suitable curing agent.

Saturated polyester is commonly supplied as solid chips or flakes. It is combined with pigments, Fillers, Curing Agents, and Additives during powder-coating manufacturing.

The term helps distinguish it from liquid unsaturated polyester used in fiberglass and casting.

Carboxyl-Functional Polyester Resin

Carboxyl-functional polyester resin contains controlled carboxyl end groups.

These groups react with curing agents such as:

  • TGIC

  • HAA

  • Selected epoxy components

The acid value helps describe the concentration of these reactive groups and is used to calculate the curing ratio.

This name is especially useful for technical purchasing because it explains the resin’s curing direction more clearly than the broad term “polyester.”

A buyer should still confirm:

  1. Acid value

  2. Viscosity

  3. Tg

  4. Color

  5. Cure condition

  6. Compatible curing agent

  7. Target gloss

  8. Indoor or outdoor grade

Two carboxyl-functional resins can have very different formulation behavior.

Hydroxyl-Functional Polyester Resin

Hydroxyl-functional polyester contains reactive hydroxyl groups and may be used with isocyanate-based curing agents or other compatible crosslinkers.

This system can support selected powder-coating applications requiring particular appearance, chemical resistance, or low-temperature curing behavior.

It should not be confused with carboxyl-functional TGIC or HAA resin.

The term “polyester resin” alone does not reveal which functional group is present. The buyer must specify the curing chemistry.

Powder-Coating Polyester Binder

“Polyester binder” is a practical application name.

The resin binds pigments and fillers together and later forms the continuous coating film after curing.

This term is useful in general communication, but it may be too broad for a purchase order.

A complete order should state:

  • Resin code or approved equivalent

  • Curing system

  • Technical indicators

  • Packaging

  • Batch tolerance

  • Testing method

  • Application

  • Annual volume

Using only “polyester binder” can lead to the wrong resin being quoted.

TGIC Polyester Resin

TGIC polyester resin normally means a carboxyl-functional polyester designed to react with triglycidyl isocyanurate.

The system is often described by resin-to-curing-agent ratios such as:

  • 90/10

  • 93/7

  • 95/5

  • 96/4

These ratios are application shorthand rather than complete chemical specifications.

They help indicate the acid-value range and expected TGIC demand, but formulation behavior still depends on molecular design, viscosity, Tg, reaction speed, and additives.

A 93/7 resin from two suppliers may not provide identical leveling, extrusion, gloss, or curing performance.

HAA or Primid Polyester Resin

HAA polyester is a carboxyl-functional resin designed to cure with hydroxyalkylamide.

It may also be called:

  • Primid polyester

  • TGIC-free polyester

  • Hydroxyalkylamide-cured polyester

  • Eco-oriented outdoor polyester

“Primid” is widely used in industry language, but technical teams should confirm the actual curing agent and resin ratio.

HAA systems have different reaction behavior from TGIC systems. Direct substitution without reformulation can cause film defects, gloss change, mechanical loss, or incomplete cure.

Unsaturated Polyester Resin

Unsaturated polyester resin is a different material category.

It commonly contains reactive unsaturation and is cured with a reactive diluent and initiator system.

It is widely used in:

  • Fiberglass

  • Marine products

  • Artificial stone

  • Castings

  • Tanks

  • Pipes

  • Composite panels

Trade names can include fiberglass resin, laminating resin, casting resin, and boat resin.

These names should not be used for solid powder-coating polyester because the chemistry, supply form, processing, and applications are different.

Is Polyester the Same as PET?

PET is polyethylene terephthalate, one specific polyester polymer.

It is used in bottles, films, fibers, packaging, and engineering plastics.

Powder-coating polyester resins belong to the wider polyester family but are engineered with different molecular weights, functional groups, and curing behavior.

Calling every polyester resin “PET resin” is inaccurate.

The reverse is also true: PET is polyester, but not every polyester is PET.

Why Naming Accuracy Matters in Bulk Purchasing

An unclear material name can cause:

  • Wrong curing-agent selection

  • Incorrect formula ratio

  • Extrusion instability

  • Unexpected gloss
