Polyester resin is usually selected when outdoor weather resistance and color retention matter, while epoxy resin is valued for adhesion, corrosion protection, chemical resistance, and electrical insulation. Architectural aluminum, outdoor furniture, railings, fences, lighting fixtures, signs, and exterior machinery housings often require a polyester system. These parts face sunlight, rain, temperature changes, and repeated outdoor exposure, so long-term appearance is just as important as initial hardness.

The curing route must also be considered. Carboxyl Polyester Resins can be formulated with TGIC or HAA Curing Agents, but the two systems do not use the same resin specification or formulation balance. The curing agent must match the resin’s functionality and acid value.

Where Epoxy Resin Has the Advantage

Epoxy resin develops strong adhesion to prepared metal and is widely used where corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, or electrical insulation takes priority. It is frequently selected for primers, internal equipment components, electronic insulation, pipes, valves, and metal parts used away from continuous sunlight.

Its main limitation is exterior appearance retention. Extended ultraviolet exposure can cause chalking and visible color change. That does not necessarily mean the protective film immediately stops functioning, but it can make pure epoxy less attractive for decorative outdoor finishes.

Hybrid polyester-epoxy systems occupy the middle ground. They combine characteristics of both resins and are commonly considered for indoor metal furniture, shelving, appliances, and general-purpose finishes where smooth appearance and balanced mechanical properties are required.

Resin Quality Is Only Part of the Formula

Even a well-selected resin can underperform if the rest of the formulation is not balanced. Curing-agent compatibility, pigment loading, filler selection, extrusion temperature, particle-size distribution, metal pretreatment, film thickness, and the true metal temperature during curing all affect the final result.

  • Expected service temperature

  • Contact with chemicals, moisture, or salt

  • Required gloss, texture, color, and film thickness
