What Does TGIC Stand for in Powder Coating?

TGIC stands for triglycidyl isocyanurate. In powder coating, it is a multifunctional epoxy curing agent commonly paired with carboxyl-functional polyester Resin. Its epoxy groups react with the resin’s carboxyl groups during baking, forming the crosslinked network that gives the coating its hardness, adhesion, mechanical strength, and durability.

That direct answer is useful, but the letters alone do not explain why TGIC matters to a powder coating formulator.

Is TGIC a Resin or a Curing Agent?

TGIC is a curing agent, not the main film-forming polyester resin. The polyester supplies most of the coating’s structural backbone, while TGIC connects the resin chains during curing.

Before baking, the ingredients remain part of a dry powder mixture. As the coated metal heats up, the powder melts and flows. The TGIC and polyester then react, changing the molten layer into a thermoset film that will not melt back into its original powder form.

Why Acid Value Matters

The required TGIC dosage is related to the acid value and reactive functionality of the polyester resin. A higher or lower acid value changes the amount of curing agent needed to reach an appropriate reaction balance.

Formulation descriptions such as 93:7, 96:4, or 90:10 are often used to identify polyester-to-TGIC systems. They should not be treated as universal recipes. The grade specification, equivalent relationship, pigment and filler loading, processing conditions, and desired film performance still need to be checked.

Too little curing agent may leave the coating under-crosslinked. An excessive or poorly balanced addition can also change flow, mechanical properties, storage behavior, and surface appearance. Production validation is therefore more dependable than copying a nominal ratio from another formula.

Where Are TGIC Polyester Systems Used?

TGIC-cured polyester powder coatings are known for exterior durability, broad processing behavior, strong mechanical properties, and stable film formation. They are commonly considered for architectural metal, outdoor furniture, railings, fencing, signs, lighting fixtures, machinery housings, and other exposed metal parts.

The complete coating still has to be designed around its environment. Coastal exposure, high UV levels, chemical contact, sharp edges, heavy film build, or unusual oven conditions may require changes to the resin grade, Additives, pigments, pretreatment, or cure schedule.
