How Many Types of Powder Coating Additives?

2026-08-20

There is no single fixed number of powder coating additive types because they can be classified by chemistry, mechanism or function. In practical formulation work, they are commonly divided into at least eight groups: leveling, degassing, matting, wax, dispersing, texturing, stabilizing and curing-control Additives. A bulk supply of functional powder coating additives should be organized by the problem each group is intended to solve.

Main Additive Categories

Additive typeMain functionTypical problem addressedImportant selection factor
Leveling agentControls melt flow and surface tensionOrange peel, craters, poor smoothnessResin compatibility
Degassing agentHelps trapped gas escapePinholes, bubbles, volcano defectsSubstrate and film thickness
Matting agentReduces or controls glossExcessive or unstable glossIndoor/outdoor system
Wax additiveImproves slip and abrasion behaviourScratching, surface frictionWax chemistry and particle size
Dispersing aidImproves pigment and filler wettingSpecks, weak colour, poor hidingPigment package
Texturing agentCreates a controlled surface patternUnstable texture or flat appearanceDosage and particle distribution
StabilizerSlows thermal or UV degradationYellowing, chalking, gloss lossExposure conditions
Catalyst or acceleratorAdjusts cure reactionSlow cure or incomplete conversionResin and curing chemistry

Several products can provide more than one function. A surface modifier may improve wetting, gloss and shrinkage resistance at the same time.

Leveling Additives

Leveling agents help the molten powder spread into a more uniform film before gelation.

They are often considered when the coating shows:

  • Orange peel

  • Shrinkage cavities

  • Uneven surface flow

  • Poor substrate wetting

Our acrylate-based leveling agent is designed to adjust surface tension and improve flow during curing. Dosage and compatibility still require formulation testing.

Degassing Additives

Gas can originate from moisture, porous substrates, trapped air or volatile components. If the film closes too quickly, gas may form pinholes and bubbles.

Benzoin is widely used in powder coatings as a degassing aid. It does not replace correct substrate preparation, extrusion control or oven settings.

Matting Systems

Matting can be created by physical surface microstructure, chemical incompatibility, reaction-rate differences or a combination of mechanisms.

Our range includes:

Indoor and outdoor matte coatings should not automatically use the same additive. Weatherability, over-bake stability and gloss retention must be considered.

Wax and Surface-Control Additives

Polyethylene, PTFE and other micronized waxes can affect smoothness, coefficient of friction, abrasion resistance and powder handling.

Our micronized wax powder is available in several chemical directions and particle sizes.

Wax selection should account for recoating, printing or bonding after the powder film has cured.

Additive Packages for Specific Systems

A bulk supply of functional powder coating additives may combine several compatible products rather than one universal additive.

Different packages can be developed for:

  • Polyester-TGIC coatings

  • HAA-cured polyester

  • Epoxy-polyester hybrid

  • Pure epoxy

  • Metallic powder coatings

  • Low-temperature-cure powder

  • Matte architectural coatings

  • Heat-resistant systems

The final package must be evaluated as one formula because interactions between additives can change the result.

Why the Classification Is Not a Shopping List

A formula does not need one additive from every category.

Each additional raw material increases the number of interactions that must be controlled. The shortest stable formula is often preferable to a complicated formula containing several overlapping products.

Our technical team reviews the coating system, target performance and production conditions before proposing additive combinations.

Build a Functional Additive Package

Send us the current resin, curing agent, pigment package, target gloss, film thickness, curing profile and main defect. We can prepare a trial sequence rather than recommending several uncontrolled changes at once.

Request a system-specific additive package for your bulk supply of functional powder coating additives.
