How Is Polyester Powder Coating Made?
A typical polyester powder coating contains polyester resin, curing agent, pigments, Fillers, flow Additives, degassing agents and other functional materials.
After premixing, the materials pass through melt extrusion. The extrudate is cooled, crushed, ground and classified before electrostatic application.
Inside the curing oven, the powder goes through three main stages:
Powder particles melt.
The molten material flows over the substrate.
Polyester resin reacts with the curing agent.
The coating needs enough time to flow before crosslinking advances too far. A fast-reacting system may show poor leveling, while a slow-reacting system may not cure fully at the normal line speed.
How Does TGIC Work in Polyester Coatings?
TGIC is a multifunctional epoxy curing agent. Its epoxy groups react with the acid groups in carboxyl-functional polyester resin.
A correctly designed TGIC polyester system can offer:

Good UV stability
Strong adhesion
Balanced hardness and flexibility
Stable surface appearance

How Does HAA Work?
HAA, or hydroxyalkylamide, reacts with carboxyl-functional polyester resin to create a TGIC-free thermosetting finish.
When the polyester resin and curing agent are correctly balanced, HAA systems can provide good film appearance, color stability, mechanical performance and outdoor durability.
However, their curing reaction releases water. Manufacturers therefore need to pay attention to:
Resin melt viscosity
HAA dosage
Degassing additives
Extrusion temperature
Particle-size distribution
Film thickness
Oven profile
Actual metal temperature
If gas cannot escape before the film surface closes, pinholes may appear.
Why Does Direct Substitution Cause Problems?
The most important point in polyester powder coatings: TGIC vs. HAA is that the Curing Agents are not interchangeable.
TGIC-compatible and HAA-compatible polyester resins may have different acid values, reactivity and equivalent requirements. Replacing TGIC with HAA while retaining the original resin and additive package can create an incorrect reactive balance.
The coating may look acceptable immediately after curing but fail later tests for hardness, impact resistance, solvent resistance, adhesion, gloss or weathering.
