What Chemicals Are Used in Powder Coating?

Powder coatings normally contain a film-forming Resin, curing agent, pigments, Fillers and functional Additives. Common chemistries include polyester, epoxy, epoxy-polyester hybrid, polyurethane and silicone systems. Resin Forms the Main Coating Film

Resin is the principal binder. During heating, it melts, flows over the substrate and forms the continuous coating film.

Common powder-coating resins include:

Polyester Resin

Polyester resin is widely used for exterior architectural parts, outdoor furniture, appliances and general metal products.

Carboxyl-functional polyester can be cured with TGIC or HAA. The resin structure influences weatherability, melt viscosity, mechanical performance, gloss and curing behaviour.

Epoxy Resin

Epoxy powder coatings provide strong adhesion, chemical resistance and corrosion-protection performance. They are commonly considered for indoor industrial components, primers, electrical insulation and protective applications.

Extended UV exposure can cause chalking and gloss change, so epoxy is generally not the first choice for decorative outdoor finishes.

Epoxy-Polyester Hybrid Resin

Hybrid systems combine epoxy and polyester components. They provide a useful balance of appearance, mechanical properties and processing stability for indoor appliances, furniture and metal products.

Silicone Resin

Silicone resin is used when the coating must withstand elevated temperatures. Potential applications include exhaust parts, heaters, ovens and other heat-exposed metal components.

The temperature requirement should be defined as continuous and peak exposure rather than described only as “heat resistant.”

Curing Agents Build the Crosslinked Structure

Thermosetting powder coatings require a compatible curing agent.

TGIC reacts with carboxyl-functional polyester to form a crosslinked network. HAA provides a TGIC-free curing route for suitable polyester systems. Epoxy resins may react with polyester, dicyandiamide derivatives, phenolic curing agents or other compatible hardeners.

The correct curing-agent amount depends on resin functionality and equivalent weight. It should be calculated rather than selected as a general percentage.

Pigments Create Colour and Opacity

Pigments provide colour, hiding power and selected functional properties.

Typical categories include:

  • Titanium dioxide for white and opacity

  • Corrosion-inhibiting pigments

Pigments must tolerate extrusion and curing temperatures. Outdoor formulations also need pigments with suitable light and weather stability.

Fillers Adjust Cost and Film Behaviour

Mineral fillers can influence hardness, density, sanding behaviour, mechanical properties and formulation cost.

Common examples include:

  • Barium sulfate

  • Calcium carbonate

  • Talc

  • Mica

  • Wollastonite

A filler should not be selected only because it lowers raw-material cost. Particle size, oil absorption, purity and dispersion can affect extrusion, spray application and surface appearance.

Additives Fine-Tune Performance

Additives are used in relatively small amounts but can strongly affect manufacturability and film quality.

They may control:

  • Melt flow

  • Leveling

  • Degassing

  • Gloss

  • Texture

  • Pigment dispersion

  • Surface slip

  • Scratch resistance

  • UV stability

  • Cure speed

Powder Coatings Usually Avoid Liquid Solvent Carriers

Conventional powder coating is applied as a dry powder and does not require the liquid solvent carrier used in many wet paints.

This does not mean every raw material is free from hazard. Operators should follow the applicable safety data sheets, dust-control procedures, personal-protection requirements and local chemical regulations.
